ATTEMPT TO SINK CRANE

Engine-Room Flooded (NX. Press Association) WELLINGTON. March 28. An attempt , to sink the Wellington Harbour Board's 746-ton floating crane Hikitia by some unknown person who opened the ash cock on the vessel was reported at last night’s meeting of the board. The incident, which occurred on March 10, resulted in several pumps being rushed to the ship after a fireman visiting her to bank fires that evening found three feet of water in the engine room and in the stokehold bilges. The ash cock, through which sea water entered the vessel, is used on coal burners to hose down the ashes when cleaning fires. The general manager of the board (Mr H. Meechen) said today that, in future, a stricter watch would be kept on all the board's vessels, its dredge and three pilot launches. This is the second attempt to sink a vessel ait her moorings along the breastwork. A few months ago the sea cock of the fishing trawler Golden Joy lying at Queen’s Wharf was opened and but for the vigilance of her owner, she would have foundered.
