ELECTIONS IN FIJI

30 To Contest 12 Seats (N.Z. Preu Ain- Copyright) SUVA, March 26. Thirty candidates will contest the 12 elected seats—four Fijian, four European, four Indian—in the first elections for Fiji’s new Legislative Council. The elections will be held between April 17 and May 4. When nominations closed, 10 Fijians, eight European and 12 Indian candidates were listed. Two Fijians and one European have been returned unopposed. One of these two Fijians is Mr Ruvuma Vunivalu, a Cambridge graduate who aroused international interest last December when he introduced a motion which stated there should be no change in Fiji’s present Constitution till the indigenous Fijian people express their desire for further change. The motion, which was carried by a substantial majority in the Legislative Council, have been followed by other Fijian declarations, including a suggestion that Fiji should be associated with Britain in the same way u the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are associated.
