WINDS AT MOMONA

Plane Could Not Land (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. February 24. Strong cross-winds stopped • National Airways Corporation DC3 from landing at Dunedin airport, Momona, late this afternoon. The aircraft was diverted to the old Taieri aerodrome. This was the first time Mimona has been closed to any aircraft because of high cross-winds. Friendship flights were not affected. A Civil Aviation Administration spokesman said the winds were blowing across the main runway at 20 knots. The safety margin allowed a DC3 was 17 knots.

He said cross-winds on the main runway were “very unusual.” Operations at Momona had not previously been affected by abnormal winds. The winds lasted nearly two hours and at 7.20 pm. the DC3 was able to fly to Momona, refuel, and take off again for Christchurch.
