Surf Life Saving Waimairi Retains Canterbury Championship

- v . Repeating last season’s performance, the \\ aimain Surf Lafe-saving Club has won the symbol of surfing supremacy in Canterbury—the Canterbury championship pennant. When the fourth and final championship carnival of the season at 'Baylor’s Mistake yester-’ day, the club had an overwhelming lead of 40 points from its nearest opponent.

Second place in the pennant championship, an aggregate of points in all championships, went to Taylor’s Mistake, with 39 points. Sumner was close behind with 35 Pennant points were:—Waimairi 79, Taylor’s Mistake 39, Sumner 35, New Brighton 34, North Beach 25 South Brighton 24. Conditions for the carnival were difficult for competitors and officials alike. At high tide in the afternoon, there was very little beach to work on, and to make matters worse, the waves were often breaking right on the water line. During the ski and paddle-board events,- the sea was like a mill pond, and consequently these events were very dull fare. One of the closest finishes of the day was in the senior surf relay race for the Black and White Cup. Three fourth-lap swimmers—l. Greig (Waimairi), G Dann (New Brighton), and A Lee (South Brighton)—came out of the water together. Dann and Lee fell into a pot-hole and then Greig tripped in the shallow water. Dann recovered to cross the line first. As expected, the senior sixman rescue and resuscitation contest for the Keseven Cup resulted in a good win for South Brighton. The team had the reasonably low points deduction of 6 8. Sumner was second with 8 2 points lost, and New Brighton was third with 9.15 points lost. The final result was not as the heats indicated, although before competition began South Brighton was the favourite. In the second heat Waimairi (8. points lost) narrowly beat South Brighton (8.45 points lost) for first place, and in the first heat Sumner had to be content with second place behind New Brighton.

R. Dalton (North Beach) retained his senior surf ski title by the narrowest of margins. Both he and D. Quane (Sumner) came in on the same shoot and collided a few yards from the beach. Dalton crossed the finishing line inches ahead of Quane. One of the largest fields to take part in a Canterbury interclub surf race took to the water in the junior individual and teams’ surf race championship. There were 92 entries for the event which was won comfortably by G. Stringer (Waimairi). The teams’ section was won by South Brighton A.
