TROTTING Deft-Garry Kent For Invercargill Double

“The Press” Special Service

INVERGARGILL, February 14.

Deft in the President’s Handicap and Garry Kent in the Southern Stakes will be a strongly-fancied double combination on the opening day of the Invercargill Trotting Club’s summer meeting at the Southland Raceway on Saturday.

DeM ie to concede starts of up to 48yds in toe first leg, bi* she looks quite capable of it K. Batkxto, who has driven her in several ot her races, will be behind D. Todd's stable representative.

Country Song. Deft will be driven by J. Bond, who has driven her in her last two successes. He returned earlier in the week after taking Tactile to Australia. The weather has been fine and the track will be hard •nd fast. After winning three races in succession Deft failed in

two appearances at Forbury Park. Her best effort was a third to Lilt and Terako Queen at a 2min 9sec mile rate, but at no stage did she handle the Forbury track with confidence. She had also raced well below her best st Addington lest August. On the grass track at Invercargill Deft will be a different proposition. It is some time since Chiffon won a race, but she has been placed in two of her five appearances this season. Ait her second last start she finished second to Whipson in the Winton Clip without having much in her favour in the running. On the strength of that placing she would be one of the better prospects.

The Waimate visitor. Happy Songster, has won twice this season at Westport, but he will strike a much stronger field on this occasion.

Lady Ngaire graduated to this class ait her last start—at Invercargill in January when she beat a sprint field. She has always been a competent front runner and in her present form is entitled to be considered. Robyn has shown little form since she joined H. W. Cox’s Winton team.

Throwaway looked one of the best young horses in sight when he won three races as a four-year-old last season, but he has not made much impression in his five starts thus term.

Surveyor has not done much racing this season, having had only four starts. He won one of these —at Invercargill in December—and he also finished a moderate fourth in the cup. At times he has given the impression that he would reach a tight mark.

The Oamaru pair. Worthy River and Faru, which will give away 60 yards, are certain to be considered. Worthy River was a winner over two miles at Timaru last month, and although he failed at Forbury in his only start since, he cannot be written off; Faru has not won for some time, but in his two appearances at Forbury Park he raced with much more confidence and gave the impression that he was nearing his best. He was fifth on the second night at Forbury after making most of the running.

Country Song’s solidity has been a feature of has form this season. From four starts be has been a winner and three times placed. He may lack toe bnlhance ot some of the others in this field and K. Ba-Hoch will have to be hard at work cm him all the way. but Country Song is reliable. Hydro Boy would need to improve sharply and Mountain Song, which has been placed in each of bis last two starts, may find toe two-mfle journey as much as he can handle.

Second Leg Garry Kent, which has won twice tods season, Should have toe edge on toe toree-year-olds in toe Southern Stakes, toe second leg of toe double. Both his wins have been clear-cut and from 24yds he is quite capable of reaching toe front early and making toe most of toe running. He failed at Forbury Park at his last start but at no stage did he get a run, being hopelessly pocketed on toe rails from toe outset. Selections: 3 p.m.—Monowai Handicap: Halberg brkt.. White World, False Queen brkt. 3.30 p.m—Probationary Handicap: Maori Falla, Trysail, Worthy Hanover. 4.10 p.m.—Presidents Handicap: Deft.
