Bowls WEST COAST FOURS

Title-Holder Eliminated

(From Out Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, Feb. 14. W. P. O-NeiU, winner of the New Zealand fours championship at the .recent tournament in Wellington and also holder of the West Coast title, was eliminated in his first match of post-section play in this year s West Coast tournament on the Greymouth green this afternoon.

His team was defeated by a Karoro club combination comprising J. Perrin, J. Rubbo. F. A. Sadler, and G. Batty (skip). The score was 19-10. and there was never much doubt that Batty had the stronger combination.

O Neill was called upon to do a lot of retrieving, and while he succeeded on a number of occasions he could not maintain his effort throughout. O’Neill had qualified with seven wins out of eight, whereas Batty had only five wins in section play. O’Neill’s one loss in section play was in the first game played on the Karoro green yesterday morning, his conqueror being H. Tallentire. of the Runanga club. It was at Runanga that O'Neill started playing bowls many years ago before he transferred to Auckland.

H. Baird (Westport R.S.A.), the only skip to win all eight games in section play, was beaten in his first game this morning by E. Jones (Karoro). who had seven wins. Jones then had a tense struggle in the second round before eliminating H. Geary (Cobden) by a single point. Another keenly contested game in this round was that between W. Bell (St. Albans) and W Martyn (Nelson). Bell winning by one point. Martyn was substituting for G. Monopoli. The quarter-final game at the Greymouth green between Batty and Emms provided a large evening gallery with plenty of excitement. Batty was down 2-10 with eight ends played, but his team then rallied and Emms did not score in the last five ends. Jones and Coxhill had an even tussle on the adjoining rink, the Nelson team doing better in the concluding stages to win.

McKenzie and Spearman gave the spectators some thrills at Blaketown before McKenzie won by one point. The other game there was disappointing. Bell gaining an easy win over Doyle In the semi-finals tomorrow morning Batty will play Coxhill, and Bell will meet McKenzie

Play again took place in bright sunshine and calm weather. The Greymouth and Blaketown greens were both in fast order. The following were the results of post-section play First Round.—E.
