Electrifying S.A. Railways

(N.ZJ , .A.-Rtut*T—Copyright) PRETORIA. The South African Railways* big electrification programme is being expanded at a cost of millions of rands (one rand equals 10s), the Minister of Transport (Mr Ben Schoeman) said in Pretoria.

Provision would be made in next year’s railway budget for the expenditure from loan funds of about the same amount as was being spent this year. This would finance major development projects now being planned, including electrification.

So far 1488 miles—327B single track miles—have been electrified. Other important sections will be electrified soon. The total length of the new projects is 635 miles.
