BEEF AND VEAL

U.S. Considers

Quotas

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, January 23. A bill proposing the establishment of quotas on beef and veal imports into the United States was introduced in the United States Senate today. Senator Milward Simpson, a new Republican member from the western beef-pro-ducing State of Wyoming, sponsored the measure, which will be referred to a Congressional committee for study.

Australia is the major foreign supplier of beef to the American market.

Senator Simpson said beef and veal imports reached a record level last year and might eventually injure the United States domestic industry.

His proposed bill would fix a quota for beef and veal equal to the average imports over the last five years.

Tariffs on such imports would remain the same if the exporting country did not exceed its quota, but foreign suppliers would pay a triple tariff under the bill on beef and veal imports exceeding their quota.
