(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 28 Four city policemen
have allegedly confessed that th’ey killed four beggars and threw their
bodies into a river “to
keep them off the streets.”
Police Superintendent Newton Marques Cruz said today the policemen took the beggars from a cell at midnight on January 18 and drove to a bridge.
There they ordered the four out of the police van, bound them with rags and belts, shot them, and threw their bodies into th« river below.
Police said the four laughed and joked while re-enacting the killings, United Press International reported.
Police carried out a "blits” against the hundreds of beggars on city streets last December. More than 80 were arrested.
