FUTURE OF SWAZILAND
Talks Open In London (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, January 28. The British Commonwealth and Colonial Secretary (Mr Sandys) today formally opened constitutional talks at the Colonial Office which will decide the future political advance of Swaziland. Swaziland, about the size of Wales, is surrounded by the territory of the South African Republic, except for 70 miles which border Mozambique, Portuguese East Africa. The British High Commissioner for Basutoland. Bechuanaland, and Swaziland, Sir John Maud—who is also British Ambassador to South Africa—administers Swaziland through the Resident Commissioner, Mr B. A. Marwick. Internally it is ruled by the Ngwenyama (paramount chief). Sobhuza IT, and his National Council. Today Mr Sandys welcomed to London for the talks 15 delegates from Swaziland, including six members of the National Council, four members of the European Advisory Council (which advises the Resident Commissioner) and five men representing differing political views.
