Justice Walter V. Schaeffer, a judge of the Illinois Supreme Court, was entertained in Chrirtchurch during the week-end by the president (Mr R. P. Thompson) and member* of the Camterbury District Law Society. Justice Schaeffer passed through Christchurch on his way to Wellington after attending the Australian Law Council's biennial convention in Hobart. His visit to Australia and New Zealand is sponsored by the United States Department of State. On Monday, Justice Schaeffer met members of the legal profession in Blenheim, and yesterday addressed the Wellington District Law Society. He will be the guest of the Chief Justice (Sir Harold Barrowclough) today. In attaining hi* present position ao an Illinois Supreme Court Judge, Justice Schaeffer has had a distinguished career. After 12 years in private practice, he served from 1940 to 1051 as professor of law at Northwestern University in Illinois, being chairman of the Illinois oommassiom to study State government from 1949 to 1951.

He was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court in 1951. and has since established a reputation as one of the most highly-regarded State court judges in the United States.
