SUVA, January 26.
Watched by a colourful crowd of Fijians, Indians, and Europeans, the Royal yacht. Britannia, entered Lautoka Harbour in brilliant tropical sunshine yesterday. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will join the Britannia at Lautoka on February 1 for the journey to Suva 120 miles away. Commanded by RearAdmiral J. C. C. Henley, the Britannia was manoeuvred into Lautoka Harbour by her own crew while the Royal Navy survey ship, H.M.S. Cook, gave a welcome signal and a sugar ship and Japanese freighter dipped flags in salute.
The band of the Royal Marines in tropical khaki played on the Britannia’s upper deck. A formidable programme of entertainment by people of all races has been prepared for the Royal yacht and private offers of entertainment are still pouring in. Next Friday night the Queen and the Duke will drive to Lautoka from Nandi Airport after their arrival from London via Vancouver.
The H.M.N2S. Otago, commanded by Commander J. F. McKenrie, will sail from Auckland on Monday for Suva to begin duty as escort ship to the Royal yacht, Britannia. The frigate will join the Britannia at Lautoka and its first duty will be a night trip to Suva.
