Soccer FRIGHT FOR BURNLEY

Held To Draw At Home

(N2J*UI.-Reuter—Copyright) _ LONDON, Jan. 26. Burnley naw favourite for the Football Association Cup trophy, had a fright today when the team waa held to a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool In the only fourth round tie to be played because of the severe weather.

But today it was shaken by the Lancashire rival, Liverpool, which took a first-half lead with a goal in the twenty-fourth minute. Burnley got the equaliser five minutes after the interval.

Three English Cup third round matches were played today with Swindon bringing off a surprise 2-0 win over Luton, at. Luton.

Another unexpected setback also came to Portsmouth which was held to 1-1 draw at home to Scunthorpe. It was touch and go whether the Burnley-Liverpool match would be played, but after a long inspection this morning the referee considered the pitch fit enough to play. There were slippery patches on the surface and Liverpool was better equipped for the conditions. Since losing 1-3 at home to Burnley in the League on November 3. Liverpool went nine matches without defeat, winning the last eight and drawing the other. It maintained its improvement today with a lively display Which nearly put Burnley out of the cup. A crowd of just under 50,000 saw a fine match—considering the conditions. The replay will be held at Liverpool on Wednesday evening. Swindon’s win earned It a fourth round home tie against the first division “millionaire” club, Everton. Playing in basketball boots on a pitch so heavily sanded that it resembled a beach. Swindon took a shock lead over Luton after seven minutes.

Portsmouth, which has not been beaten at home since the end of September missed a penalty in the eighth minute. Scunthorpe, which has won only once in 12 away league matches this season, led 1-0 at half-time with a goal. Nine of the 16 Scottish Cup games were played, and both Hamilton and Kilmarnock were involved in surprise draws at home.

Hamilton were shocked by the non-league team Nairn County, which scored first in the 1-1 draw.

Kilmarnock was held to a goal-less draw by Queen of South which lost its goalkeeper 10 minutes from the end, when he was knocked out and carried off on a stretcher.

Queen’s Park gained the biggest win when it beat Alloa Athletic, 5-1. St. Mirren, cup finalist last season, won 3-1 at Berwick.

Dividends Of Pools

(N.ZJ’.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, January 27. Dividends from Britain’s first "guess the football pools” system held yesterday are expected to be average. Because of the ice and snow which is still affecting British soccer, the Pools Promoters’ Association appointed a panel of five experts to decide what the results of the games would have been if they had been played. The general opinion Is that treble chance first dividends for 2d will be from £3500 to £7OOO.

For a farthing they will be only about £5OO.

28 Jugoslavs Suspended

(N.Z.P.A.‘Reuter—Copyright) BELGRADE, January 28. Twenty-eight Jugoslav footballers have been suspended for life, after inquiries into allegations that a betting ring "fixed” matches.

The Football Association of Serbia said yesterday it had studied . police evidence and concluded that there was "irrefutable proof that the players had committed offences.
