A. DYER RUNS BEST TIME FOR MILE

Performances did not match the excellent conditions at the inter-club athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday. Most of the province', top athletes were succ eeefialjy defending the Dorrie Leslie Cup in Welling-

ton. Close finiehes were provided in several events, however, with the younger competitor, in the senior ranks being prominent. The young Rangtora distance runner, A. Dyer, had an all-the-way win in the senior B mile, which be ran in 4mui 26.8sec—hu best time for the distance. This effort would have been good enough to gain a place in the senior A contest which followed. Univertoty’s J. D- Macdonald, the Canterbury champion, appeared to have command of the senior A field ss the runners turned tor home. B. Cattermole i Toe H) kept challenging right up the straight and burst past Macdonald, who eased a yard from the tape. The time was 4mm 34.95ec. There were some close firashes to the under-age events also. R Harbaon took the junior 860 yards in 2mln l-6eec while in a David and Goliath contest. J. Walls (Toe H) gave another demonstration of his all-round ability by winning four events. He took the junior long jump wrth 30ft 7ki. 31in behind the senior dtotance by B. Blackwell. the junior 75 yards in 8 2sec, the junior 230 ywds ln 23.1 sec, and the 220 yards hurdles in 27sec. The last event was run in conjunction with the senior field, which finKied behind Wails. Several young athletes showed considerable versatiliv. amongst them being M. Meager (Shirley) with wins in the boys under 15 75 yard. (Seec). the javelin <93ft Ilin), and a second in toe 80 metre hurdles il3*ec). A double win was gained by C. Baker (Riccerton) in the 280 yard, (28AMC) Mid the, long jump (16ft 7in). K.
