ATHLETICS Canterbury Comfortably Win Against Wellington

(From Oar Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, January 27. Canterbury, with superiority in the women’s and junior sections, retained the T. W. Dome Leslie memorial trophy in the imer«provincial athletics meeting against Wellington on Saturday.

The holders scored 185 points to Wellington’s 151. Canter* bury won the women’s section, 60*28, and the junior section, 70*45, biit the Wellington seniors were successful, 78*55.

The meeting was staged in near-perfect condition at Hataitai Park. More than half Canterbury’s points in the women’s events were scored by Misses M. Chamberlain and L. Curtis, and Mrs V. Young.

Miss Chamberlain won effortlessly in the 220 and 440 yards. Miss Curtis won the high jump and was second in the shot putt and long jump, while Mrs Young was victorious in the shot and discus, and runner-up in the hurdles and high jump. The national decathlon champion and javelin record holder. M. Speden, was the busiest, and most successful, senior athlete. He had the javelin out beyond 220ft—30ft further than the second man —won the 120 yards hurdles and long jump, and filled third place in the shot. Wellington’s senior halfmilers, M. Wall and P. Marks, both ran great races—their fastest ever—with Wall winning in Imin 53.6aec, and Marks a second slower. B. J. Everitt was a convincing winner of the three miles in 14min 4.Bsec—just six days after winning the provincial marathon championship. D. Karl and G. Pyne figured in a thrilling finish to the senior mile, with Karl holding Pyne off to win narrowly in 4min 10.9 sec. Canterbury’s junior distance runners all showed up particularly welt E. Bell won the half-mile when Wellington’s P. Kummer, who last week ran Imin 54.35ec in a handicap event, made the fatal mistake of easing up on the tape and looking over his left shoulder. Bell, finishing on well after being passed around the final turn, came up on Kummer’s right and was across the line before he had recovered. M. Jones ran most confidently to easily win the junior mile in 4min 20.9 sec, while in the three miles, R. Reekie was most impressive. He raced away from the local champion. W. Owens, over the last mile, and finished strongly in the excellent time of 14min 21.2 sec.

The national sprint champion, T. R. Heeps, looked short of competition, but still managed to get home in the 100 yards. However, Canterbury’s D. McKenzie was too strong over the final stages of the furlong and he went away to win in 22.45ec. Heepes's wife, Jeanette, was most impressive in winning the women’s 80 metres hurdles very easily in a fast 122 sec. She later won the 100 yards in 11.7 sec. The highlight of the jumping events was probably the great effort of the Wellington 15-y ear-old, Judy Wilkins, who cleared 17ft four times and won the women’s event with a leap of 17ft Bin. The Canterbury junior, K. Simpson, won the junior event with 21ft 2in, and filled third place in the senior event with the same distance. The former national high jump champion and present record holder, P. Wells (C.), won the senior event at 6ft. Results:—
