LA JONES TO RETIRE

Joint Holder Of 100yds Record

Joint holder of the Canterbury 100 yards record, and former sprint champion, L. A. Jones announced his retirement from competitive athletics on Saturday. His retirement from the track has been brought about by injuries to the hamstring of his left, leg. Now a member of the executive of the Canterbury Centre, New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, Jones, who is 25, intends to retain an interest in the sport on the administrative and coaching sides, helping both the centre and his club. Toe H. Jones, who competed in Melbourne for a period for the Power House club, was largely responsible for a large team from this club visiting Canterbury this season. Jones shares the Canterbury 100 yards record of 9.9 sec with the Empire Games representative, D. R. Batten. Jones has•. a best time of 9.6 sec for the distance, recorded at Rangiora in the 1957-58 season, but because this was achieved in a handicap event it did not qualify as a record.
