CHERUB WIN TO ESTELLE

Good Places To Canterbury

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, Jan. 27,

Canterbury boats finished second, third, fifth and sixth in the New Zealand junior Cherub yachting championships sailed in Auckland during the weekend. . The series was won by Estelle, sailed by I. McGill and T. Young, of Auckland, the yonugsters who came second in the championships at Lyttelton last year. The winners on that occasion, the Rountree brothers, came second this year in their new boat, Piranha. Bali Hai, sailed by A. Raper and P. Brittenden, scored Canterbury’s only win in a race when they took the fifth and last race yesterday morning. Estelle did not finish this race but with three wins and a second in the first four races, she had sufficient points. Bali Hai had a chance to topple Estelle when the third race was sailed in a blustery westerly on Saturday morning, but she capsized when well placed on a spinnaker run. The Rountree brothers were well up in every race, but failed to take the gun on any occasion. Cherubim sailed by R. Buick and P. Skelton, of Christchurch, was second to Estelle in the blow on Saturday morning, and finished third in the light yesterday morning to take third place over-all. Leading points were:— Estelle (Auckland) 374. 1; Piranha (Christchurch) 267, 2; Bali Hai (Christchurch) 241, 3; Itch (Wellington) 235.8, J: Cherubim (Christchurch) 233, 5; Slipaway (Christchurch) 162 6; Nereid (Auckland) 142, 7; Caliph (Wellington) 115, 8.
