Skindivers Race For Safety From Sharks

NEW PLYMOUTH, January 20. Two New Plymouth skindivers raced from the water for safety when an Bft shark swooped on the bosket of fish they were trailing 50 yards off Mikotahi rock at New Plymouth yesterday afternoon. The skindivers, Messrs Rvan Dyke and D. Wilson, were spearfishing when the snark went for the fish about 4 p.m. Mr van Dyke, who was taring the basket of four Jssh with 30 feet of line attached to his safety belt, felt ■the basket being pulled. At

flict he took no notice, thinking it was Mr Wilson putting another fish in the container But then Mr van Dyke was pulled backwards into deeper water. He turned and saw a shark ripping at the metal basket Mr van Dyke released his safety belt and and swam for shore tearing belt line, basket and fish to the shark. Mr Wilson swam with him. The men waited on the beach for 15 minutes before returning to the water to recover the belt and basket They were found damaged on the seabed. The fish were gone and there was no sign of the shark.
