WARNING TO PUPILS
“Jobs Becoming Harder To Find” (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Dec. 16. Schools and parents must emphasise to children that jobs no longer come of right, but to those who have qualifications, Mr J. A. Wilson, rector of Lytton High School, Gisborne, told the annual prize-giving ceremony. “There are 31,000 School Certificate candidates in New Zealand this year and the competition for future positions will be keen,” he said. Mr Wilson said there had been several warnings lately by those concerned with the placing of young people leaving school. Positions were not so readily available as they had been in recent years. “This has become increasingly evident in the vocations of nursing and teaching. Higher qualifications are being asked for and training college students entering in 1964 will need school certificate and one sixth form year,” said Mr Wilson. "Nurses require a minimum of three years secondary schooling and preference) is being given to those with School Certificate and one' sixth-form year. i "Vocations guidance officers report that higher qualifications are being asked for by employers taking boys into apprenticeship—at least three years post-primary and, preferably, School Certificate has become a standard prerequisite in the main centres.”
