ASSISTANCE TO LEPERS
Order Carries On Tradition (N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, December 16. The existence in New Zealand of a branch of one of the oldest orders of chivalry in Christendom, the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, is revealed by their participation in a world-wide appeal for funds for leprosy research on St. Lazarus Day, December 17. In the days of the crusades the order’s hospitaller objective was the relief of those suffering from leprosy, and to continue its ancient tradition, the order is seeking funds to enable leprosy research to continue. It was stated that leprosy today affected more than 10 million men and women. There were 13 members of the order in New Zealand. Dr. J. A. N. Keane, of Hamilton, is chancellor for New Zealand, Mr D. W. Arter, the secretary. and Mr L J. Hill the receiver-general.
