New Conditions Announced (N.ZJ’^A.-Reuter—Copyright) ST. ANDREWS (Scotland >. November 29. The British Open goif championship is to be drastically reshaped to meet modern conditions. the Royal and Ancient Club, the governing body of Britiah golf, announced from their headquarters today. Next year’s event wUI take place, as arranged, at Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s, Lancashire.
But only the final stages on July 10 to 12 will be played there.
The qualifying rounds will be held on July 4 and 5 on two courses near the championship links.
For these qualifying rounds the field will be divided into two halves, with each half playing 36 holes on one course. This, says the R. and A., will result in players having to learn only one ot the qualifying courses.
The R. and A. have again rejected a demand from the British Professional Golfers’ Association that the date of the event should be changed from July to September. Total prize-money for the 1963 championships remains at £B5OO. with £l5OO to the winner.
Another important change is that the field for the final 36 holes of the championship proper will be cut to 45. Previously there have been a maximum 50 qualifying for the last day.
