TWO-BRIDGE CONTRACT
Port Hills Rd. Interchange
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 19. A contract for the construction of twin, parallel bridges at the Port Hills road interchange has been awarded to Wilkins and Davies Construction Company, Ltd., Christchurch. The successful tender price was £42,364. The bridges are of reinforced and prestressed concrete, with spread footings. The Minister of Works (Mr Goosman) said today that the Christchurch-Lyttelton tunnel access road intersected the main highway at this point "These twin bridges will enable motorists to change from one road to the other,” said Mr Goosman.
One bridge will be 237 ft long and the other 227 ft. Each will have a 14ft clearance. Excavations will involve 21,200 cubic yards of spoil. The bridges themselves call for some 800 cubic yards of normal concrete and 450 cubic yards of prestressed concrete. In addition, 50 tons of mild steel and 20 tons of high tensile steel will be used in construction.
Tenders have been called to close on December 4 for the construction of two similar but shorter spans at the Horotane Valley road underpass. Completion date for both contracts will be one year from the date of acceptance of tenders.
