Big Business Methods Bring Cheaper Poultry

A revolution is taking place in poultry production throughout the world, according to Professor R. G. Jaap, treasurer and assistant secretary of the World Poultry Science Association. He said, in Christchurch, that a feature of recent development of the industry in the United States was the change to big business methods. often in both production and marketing. This was more marked than in any other avenue of agricultural enterprise.

In 1951-52, Professor Jaap said, he had been in Britain. Most poultry flocks were small and run outside. Now. almost overnight, there was a movement into the big business type of organisation. It was a trend that was often quite ruthless, he said, with many small producers being forced out of business

The change made for cheap poultry and eggs, he said. In Ohio, where he lives, poultry was now selling at prices that were only 70 per cent, of those ruling

during World War 11. The secret was that large organisations with big turnovers were in a position where they did not have to make much a pound. Professor Jaap, who is professor of poultry science at Ohio State University, with a special interest in animal breeding and physiology. is also editor of the "World Poultry Science Journal.'' the official journal of the World Poultry Science Association

One of the main objectives of the association, which has members in between 60 and 70 countries, including New Zealand, was to see that regular international poultry conferences were held. The most recent, from which he had just come, had been in Sydney, the first in ths Southern Hemisphere. The next would be in the Soviet Union.
