Smart Effort At Awapuni

Silver Pelt, which is expected to be one of Awapuni’s best handicappers this season, and which is entered for the Melbourne Cup. created a deep impression at the Awapuni matinee meeting held on Tuesday by the Manawatu Racing Club Silver Pelt won his heat of the hack five furlongs by four lengths after leading all the way. He will resume racing in the Robinson Handicap at Foxton on Saturday and the race will further improve him.
Air Step and Sweet Summer, which are candidates for the Bergin Handicap, showed their fitness by disputing a close finish to the race for open horses over seven furlongs. Air Step just managed to hold off her faster finishing rival. Silver Pelt won one heat of the open five furlongs while the other was won by Gold Splice, which also ran a most pleasing trial for the Bergin Handicap. Gold Splice's win .was notable for it gave the apprentice, B. A. Hill his first winning ride in his first attempt. Hill, who has just obtained his licence, is apprenticed to W. L. Aitken and he showed ability.
