The New Zealand-bred Lord showed that he is ready for his fifth attempt at the J. J. Liston Stakes (seven furlongs), at Flemington on Saturday by galloping brilliantly at Caulfield today.
Lord, winner of £51.594 in stakes, won the Liston Stakes in 1958 and was second in 1959, but was unplaced in the last two years. He is now eight, but according to turf writers, he galloped like a youngster when he defeated his stablemate Havelock over five furlongs in Imin 2| sec, nine-feet out on the holding steeplechase grass today. Teppo Star, which is very firm in the Caulfield Cup betting. ran a mile in Imin 50sec, but he had pace on only for the last three furlongs, which he ran in 38£sec. The New Zealand horse. Quite Able, ridden by his race jockey L. Moir, ran six furlongs in Imin 19jsec easily on the steeplechase grass. The Liston Stakes favourite. Anonyme, looked in perfect condition at Mentone today when he ran five furlongs in Imin ssec next to the rails on the course proper.
My Peak also looked in great shape when he ran the same distance and time on the same track.
Aquanita ran Imin 4sec next to the rails on the inside grass, while the New Zealand horse Blue Lodge ran an easy six furlongs in Imin 19isec on the same track.
Zinga Lee and Ursalon ran a mile in Imin 48 J sec on the same track. The trainer W. McNabb has not yet announced a jockey for Ursalon.
