National Airways

Sir.—lt would appear that the National Party, either by accident or design, is well on the way to making the N.A.C. bankrupt. It seems to be deliberately obstructing the N.A.C. The decision to increase the airport dues, despite the recommendation of last year’s annual report, cost some £36.000. The decision to charge import duties on all aircraft cost the N.A.C. £300.000. The decision to award S.P.A.N.Z the monopoly of the NelsonChristchurch route will cost the N.A.C. in excess of £13.000 annually. Then there was the decision to invest £14,000 of N.A.C.'s money in Bay of Plenty Airways. These additional costs, which should have not been incurred, turned a net profit of £253.818 into a deficit of £96.182. Perhaps the Government will now stop subsidising private pro-fit-making concerns with public funds and concentrate on making New Zealand’s own airline pay its way first, which, after all, is its job.— Yours, etc., F.E.S. August 22. 1962.
