Pronunciation
Sir, —It is regrettable that our radio announcers are not trained to pronounce common place names correctly. It is intolerable that we should hear Benmore pronounced with the accent erroneously on the first syllable. It is incredible that in this reputedly English province a Christchurch announcer should pronounce Rolleston in three syllables instf«’d of Rowlston. A beautifully studied accent and a charming radio lilt do not compensate for these failings.— Yours, etc., OLD ANDY. August 10, 1962.
