A WOMAN FOR MAYOR?
The time would come when the Mayor of Christchurch would be a woman, said Mrs W Grant at a ceremony to present the new chain of office for the Mayoress of Christchurch yesterday morning.
‘‘When that day arrives we shall consider it quite appropriate for this chain to be worn by her husband,” Mrs Grant said. The Mayor (Mr G. Manning) said that he had recently written to the Mayor of his native town, Swansea, asking that a “really Welsh” welcome be extended to the New Zealand Brass Band when it arrived The reply he received had been signed by a “lady mayor.”
If his old town had a woman mayor, then Mrs Grant's words would probably come true in Christchurch, he said.
