The presentation of a chain of office for the Mayoress of Christchurch to the Christchurch City Council coincided with the city’s centenary of local body government. said the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) at the presentation ceremony yesterday. ft was 94 years since Christchurch elected its first mayor and. in consequence, its first mayoress. “This morning’s ceremony is another special occasion in ♦he history of civil affairs in Ch-istchurch.” he said. Thanking the National Council of Women tor the gift on behalf o* the Christchurch City Council. Mr Manning said the chain was a symbol of women’s interest in civic affairs “I hope women will now take more interest in local government than in the past,’’ said Mr Manning.
