Western Eliminated In Cup Semi-Final

NELSON. August 5. Western, of Christchurch, was eliminated from the 1962 Chatham Cup competition when it was beaten by Nelson Rangers. 2 goals and 4 corners to 2 goals, in the South Island semifinal at Nelson on Saturday. This is the first time that a Nelson team has reached a New Zealand semi-final since the competition began in 1923. With the result In balance right to the final whistle it was the most thrilling soccer match seen in Nelson for years. The referee, Mr J. Du Feu (Nelson) was kept busy as both teams reverted to hard tackling and frequently bustling tactics The Christchurch team went ahead after 31 minutes when the centre-forward. M. Clements.. 16 yards out. scored a spectacular header off a cross by A Bishop on the right wing. Western retained its lead until well into the second half when Rangers equalised in sensational style. The right-half. B. Sprague, crossed from the sideline and Rangers’ centre-for-ward, B. McWilliam. with his back to the goal, first timed an overhead shot to catch the Western defence flat-footed. Western was unfortunate to lose its goalkeeper. D. Smith, who was injured in the seventyfifth minute when he dived at the feet of a Rangers forward to smother an almost certain goal With the score 1-all at fulltime. the referee called for an extra 30 minutes’ play. The Nelson team was superior at

this stage with many of Western's useful players wilting at the constant pressure. Rangers went ahead when O. Deajema scored a few minutes after the start of extra time. With only two minutes left P. Frost made the score 2-each when he drove home Western s third penalty attempt. This was the fourth and only successful penalty of the match. At the final whistle enthusiastic Nelson supporters swarmed across the pitch and Rangers’ captain. P. Perkins, was chaired off the ground. Cup Holders In S.I. Final (N.Z. Press Association 1 DUNEDIN.
