Table Tennis Canterbury Loses Jarvis Rose Bowl To Otago
(From Our Own Reporter)
DUNEDIN, Aug. 5. In a close and exciting struggle, the Otago table tennis team regained the Jarvis rose bowl from Canterbury on Saturday at Dunedin. The final score of Otago 14 games, 34 sets, and Canterbury 14 games, 33 sets, was a fine indication of the evenness of both teams. Down 11-13 with the mixed doubles still to be played, Canterbury came right back into the picture with three wins to Otago's one, but failed by the barest margin to retain the trophy. In the men's section, B. Foster, the South Island champion, was again at his brilliant best to win five games for Otago. It was expected that J. Armstrong, runner-up to Foster in the South Island championships, would provide stern opposition. but this did not materialise. Foster was always In complete command and won easily in straight sets. Fine Backhand Play The feature of the game was Foster's terrific backhand which was always a match-winner, and his high looped returns which Invariably forced Armstrong into errors. T. Flint played extremely well for Canterbury and his defeat of W. T. Scott, a New Zealand ranked player, was well deserved. V. N. Brightwell was also in good form and his 21-12 win over W. J. Fogarty in the final set after being 7-11 down, was a fine recovery. A minor upset was caused in the women's section when J. Green, the South Island champion. lost both her games to Otago's J. Magellan and V. Braumann. The splitting of Mrs Shadbolt and Mrs May, the South Island doubles champions, came as a surprise and may have cost Canterbury the match as the province "only W’on one double.
