RIFLE RANGE TRAINING
Improved Method For West Melton
A new basic rifle marksmanship course using Canadian equipment will soon provide better training facilities a.t the West Melton range for New Zealand Army marksmen. Adapted from an American innovation, the course covers a range 350 yards long and 27 yards wide, with nine lanes, and provides seven electronically-controlled targets for each firer, which are spaced from close range to the full length of the area. The course is designed to develop confidence in engaging combat targets and the ability to detect, and then hit them once detected.
The targets—life-sized silhouetted figures—are electronically controlled. They are meant to simulate combat conditions where targets are discove-ed by noise or movement. flash or smoke. No date has been fixed for the electronic equipment to be installed at West Melton, although a site has been chosen.
A Press Association message says that the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) tonight confirmed that the arrangement was made some time ago for the discussions to take place.
