Indoor Bowls NATIONAL TITLES
Teams Event Begins (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 22. The blue riband of the national indoor bowls tournament began this morning with 465 teams striving to gain the title. When play concluded this evening, 151 still had an interest in the event. Of these 27 went through with four wins. The title-holder, E. Blackmore (Southland), had three wins. F. Harris, one of the founders of indoor bowls in Auckland, finished with four wins. Mrs S. Streat (Auckland), who yesterday eliminated S. E. N. Smith (Auckland) in the pairs, kept up her winning form and was among the unbeaten. Smith qualified with three wins. C. Campbell (Auckland), holder of the North Island pairs and fours titles, also went through without loss. W. Naylor (Waikato) had to fight all the way to be the only one to qualify in section 33. T. Burr (Waikato) although losing his last game, had three wins in a row to go forward to post-section play. A. H. Thomas (Wellington/, winner of the fours in 1958, the pairs in 1956, and the singles in 1957, had only two wins, and was among the many to ’ fail for post-section play. R. Loader (Waikato), after his splendid exhibition in the taking the pairs title on Thursday. could win only his first game in the fours.
