Basketball ASIAN TOUR
Interpreter For Team (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 22, The New Zealand men’s basketball team on its five-week tour in September will be accompanied by its own interpreter, Mr C. Young, of Wellington, who is New Zealand's only left-handed Chinese basketball player. When Mr Young, a fruit merchant, made an offer to pay his own way with the team, he was given an official position as interpreter for the side, which will visit Australia, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Thailand, the Philippines, Formosa and Hong Kong. Mr Young is a keen indoor basketball player himself and plays in the Wellington competition for the Eastern club.
The 10-man team to play on the 18-match tour will be selected from the final trials, which will be held tonight in Wellington, and tomorrow night in Napier. Canterbury’s sole representative in the present 13-man squad is W Smith. The national team will be announced by the sole selector. Mr G. Hamlin, of Wellington, on June 30.
