DEFEAT FOR LIONS

June 16 Northern Transvaal inflicted the first defeat on the 1962 British Lions Rugby Union team when it beat the Lions by 14 points to 6 today after leading 6-0 at halftime. Northern Transvaal's points came from a goal and three tries. The Lions scored two penalty goals. The Lions fly-half. R Sharp, was injured in a .tackle by the Springbok centre. Roux, within minutes ■ from the start. Sharp was ■taken to hospital with a fractured jaw. He has been one of the Lions' stars and the first test against South Africa is only seven days away. From the moment of injury open Rugby was shunned by both sides. The Northern Transvaal players were guilty of many late tackles an donee the Lions full-back, T. Kiernan, was laid out after he had kicked :to touch. ; With Sharp out of the ■game the disrupted Lions 'team fought with tremendous spirit and their seven fori wards played brilliantly ;against the powerful Northern Transvaal pack, which included five Springboks. Weston scored all Lions points with two second half penalty goals, one a 45-yard drop. ' Northern Transvaal scored its points from two unconverted first half tries by their captain, L. Schmidt, and tries in the second half by Roux, converted by G. Steyn, and P. Uys.
