Darfield Retains ! Lead The unbeaten Darfield team maintained its lead in the Malvern Rugby Sub-union’s senior competition when it beat Kirwee, 22-0, on Saturday. Hororata, the second placed team, beat Black Diamond after being held to 3-all at half-time. Results were:— Darfield 22. Kirwee 0; Hororata 14, Black Diamond 3; Sheffield 9, United 8. Hororata v. Black Diamond Black Diamond, with the* breeze and the sun at its back, took the lead in the first three minutes against Hororata, B. Smith kicking a penalty goal 1 from straight in front of the, posts. From then on play was very even until near the end of the half when B. Grice scored a try near the corner for Hororata. The kick failed and the 1 score was 3-all at the interval. P. McGrath scored by the posts early in the second half and P. Reddington’s conversion gave Hororata a lead of 8-3. In the next few minutes C. Davison made several runs for Black Diamond. Twenty minutes from the end i P. McCullpm scored between the post?; for Hororata. Surprisingly the kick missed. G. Beer added another' try to Hororata’s tally before the end of the game. ’ [ P. Blakely and G. Beer, for-i wards, and P. McCullum in the j backs for Hororata. and L. Barr and G. Phillipson. forwards, and | B. Smith in the backs for Black! Diamond, played well. Mr E. J. Henderson was the referee. Darfield v. Kirwee In a very disappointing game, which suffered mostly from two ineffective packs, Darfield beat Kirwee. Neither set of forwards attempted anything constructive, but relied mostly on spoiling tactics, which led to many penalties. With J. Hotop directing the Darfield backs, the side did attempt to open up the game, but lack of depth in the attack invariably led to its falling down ! It appeared that neither team! was worried about the result of : the game as they did not give; the exhibition of play that they* have in previous games. ; For Kirwee N. Turner in the' forwards and B. Henderson in the backs played well, and for; Darfield F. Adams was out-1 standing in the backs. Tries for Darfield were scored! by F. Adams (3) and M. Mit-j chell. R. Adams converted two: and kicked two penalty goals. Mr G. Wright was the referee.’ United v. Sheffield This match was an even one! but was scrappy for most of the: first spell. After the interval theexhibition of Rugby was much * brighter and with forwards and backs combining better tries! were scored. For Sheffield, L. Gibbs scored ! a try. N. Kunite kicked a penalty goal and Mark Bull potted ’ i a goal. For United one try was scored and converted and one penalty goal kicked. The referee was Mr J. Holliday. Results of junior matches 1 were: Kirwee 6, Oxford 3; Darfield 9. Sheffield 0.
