Road Tunnel Name

Sir, —It is already evident that there will be some diversity of opinion in the choice of a suitable name. The tunnel will be used by many people from most parts of the Dominion and therefore becomes a matter of national interest. To avoid local controversy, may I suggest that the name of our present Governor - General would meet with unanimous acclamation and give pleasure to one who has so greatly endeared himself to all sections of the people, and appropriately forge another link with the Lyttelton family? A further suggestion is that the highway to the Christchurch portal be extended as far as possible into the city and be named Mac Gibbon avenue. If this finds favour local bodies and all brganistaians with which Mr Mac Gibbon was connected could combine with willing citizens to create a fund for a tree-and-shrub lined highway which would be a fitting memorial to a man who had the beautifying of Christchurch at heart.—Yours, etc, POSTERITY. June 15. 1962.
