CITY COUNCIL ELECTION

Request For Extra Days Renewed

The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) has been asked to reconsider his decision not to allow the Christchurch City Council to have polling spread over three days for the municipal elections this year and to have mobile polling booths.

Earlier this week the Minister announced the local bodies which have been given permission to experiment with electoral reforms under the new provisions of the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Act

The Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and the senior councillor (Cr. W. P. Glue), who is president of the Citizens’ Association, sent a telegram to the Minister yesterday ex. pressing their disappointment and asking him to reconsider Christchurch’s application. Christchurch was the biggest local body to apply for permission to experiment and the council was particularly keen to create more interest in elections, Mr Manning said. Christchurch would be an excellent place for an experiment, as the council acted for several other local bodies at elections.
