NEW PHONE DIRECTORY
Many Changes And Additions
The Post Office predicts that about 5000 new entries will appear in the Christchurch telephone directory when a new edition is distributed in November. In addition, there will be some 12,000 amendments to present entries —new members, new names and addresses. These alterations are noted automatically for the new directory as they take place, but requests by subscribers for other changes have to be lodged with the Post Office by the end of this month. The next issue of the directory will include new numbers for subscribers on the Lyttelton exchange. They will have four-figure numbers instead of three at present, with a single code number for callers dialling into the exchange from Christchurch. There will be a complete relisting of Kaiapoi subscribers, who will have an automatic service in August. A supplementary directory will be issued earlier when the change is made from the present manual exchange there.
Temporary six-figure numbers will appear in this directory These will be for new connexions in Fendalton and Shirley areas. New subscribers there will have automatic dialling for outward calls, but inward calls will be dialled to them by an operator available to callers on a three-figure exchange number. The regional engineer for the Post Office (Mr L. D. Bewley) explained these changes in the directory yesterday. In the first four months of this year, 1824 new telephones were installed in Christchurch. Another 1000 subscribers have been signed up since then, and their telephones are being installed. A further 1600 have been promised telephones in the coming months before November and the Post Office expects to supply more connexions in some areas. These should also be included in the directory.
The new edition is not being reset in type, so the old postal indicators for Christchurch cannot be amended until the book is entirely reprinted. To avoid confusion no indicators will appear against addresses which are added to the current book. A fully revised edition will probably be issued at the end of 1963 or early in 1964.
