WEST COAST TOUR
Training Squad Announced The Canterbury Rugby selectors (Messrs P. K. Rhind and P. B. Vincent) have named a squad of 21 players for the matches against Buller on June 2 and West Coast on June 4. Eleven backs, including four wings and two halfbacks, have been selected for training, but only nine will make the tour. There will be three wings and one halfback only in the final squad of 19 which will be announced on Saturday. An interesting selection is that of the Old Boys centre, P. Hatchwell, who played his first game of the season last week. Last season Hatchwell played for Merivale and in the second half of the competition he impressed with his try-scoring ability. The squad is:— Forwards. —B. R. Mann. K J. O’Shannessy (Marist), M W. Allen, A. J. Stewart. B. R. Smither, T. H. Moynihan (University). R. Abel (Linwood), R. Wainohu, D. Ellison (Christchurch), R. G. Cochrane (Country). Backs.—W. F. McCormick, D. Stephens (Linwood), A. F. Orme. Q. T. Tapsell, D J. Davison (University), P. J. Morrissey, P. Hatchwell (Old Boys), J. Adams (Albion), B. Coulter (Marist), M. F. Whitta (Sydenham), W. Birtwhistle (Christchurch). D. Arnold, H. C. Burry. B Weenink, P. G. Bark, and S. K. Henderson were not available, Cochrane will be captain and McCormick will be vicecaptain. Training will be at Rugby Park on May 27, at 10 a.m. —Advt.
