“Carmen”
Sir,—The world’s favourite opera. “Carmen," will shortly be playing in Christchurch, and for hundreds of young people it will open a door to the magic world of the theatre. This was certainly true in my own case, when “Carmen" was performed in Christchurch shortly after the war I shall never forget the tremendous thrill that first performance gave me, and I remember sitting dazed in my seat as the final curtain fell, oblivious to the applause of the audience around me I couldn't join in the applause —the drams was too utterly convincing! That this was so was almost entirely due to the superb acting of the Don Jose, who played the part with a savage intensity and a fierce pride which, when matched against the untameable *irit of the gipsy girl, made inevitable that final showdown outside the bull-ring. I think that singer’s name was Thomas West—Yours, etc., EL NAVARRO, May 20. 1962.
