Naming The Tunnel
Sir,—A local body hae *i«geeted that the tunnel should bear the name of an individual. I am very definitely of the opinion that thia would be to forget the forebears of this most important work. Its consummation is. in my view, a triumph not only for the present executive but a 100 for those far-seeing citizen* of 40 year back who, in the teeth of hostility from prominent citizen* and of Ministers of the Crown—with the notable exceptions of Sir Joseph Wand and Mr Robert Semple —persisted in the proposal The Suez Canal doe* not bear the name of the illustrious de Lesseps, whose proposal, if my memory doe* not play me false, was laughed at—another Pasteur Nor doe* the Panama Canal bew the name of de Leaaep* or any other engineer or wrveyoc. The Swiss and Italian tunnel* bear the names of th* mountains they pierce.— Yours, etc., QUI PAI.MAM MERUIT. May 19. 1960
