CRICKET Yorkshire Takes Clear Lead In County Title

LONDON, May 16.

Yorkshire took a clear lead in the county championship table when it beat Gloucestershire at Bradford by 196 runs for its second victory.

The England all-rounder R. Illingworth had a great match.

His off-spinners claimed three of Gloucestershire’s remaining seven wickets for only 6 runs, giving him match figures of nine for 57. First Points Hampshire, the county champions, gained its first points by beating Lancashire by three wickets. Set to make 318 at 78 runs an hour, Hampshire accepted the challenge, and with J. Gray leading the way with a superb century, the side got the runs with three wickets to spare. A century by the England batsman T. Graveney enabled Worcestershire to win another race with the clock and beat Middlesex.

Graveney made 119 in 110 minutes, hitting IS fours, and his side, set to get 288 in just over four hours and a quarter, won by six wickets with two minutes left. Scores:—

At Bradford.—Yorkshire 259 and 166 for nine declared beat Gloucestershire 95 and 134 by 196 runs.

At Nottingham.—Sussex 237 for seven declared and 204 for one declared beat Nottinghamshire 144 and 184 (L. Davidson 60 not out: D. Bates five for 40) by 113 runs. At Ilford.—Derbyshire 268 and three for 29 beat Essex 139 and 156 (P. Spicer 54; H. Jackson five for 65) by seven wickets. At Coventry.—Warwickshire 161 and five for 299 (M. Horner 83, M. J Smith 55) beat Kent 194 and 265 for four declared (R. Wilson 108 not out) by five wickets.

At Cambridge.—Glamorgan 326 for four declared and 180

for six declared (V. A. Jones 82) drew with Cambridge Uni-' versuy 291 and eight for 160. At Peterborough.—Northamptonshire 352 for four declared
