“Wellington's water is perfectly safe,” said the city engineer (Mr F. B C. Jeffreys' today, commenting on a report on the provisional grading of public water supplies which listed Wellington as having a partially unsatisfactory water supply The report from the Board of Health was released by the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) yesterday
Publica’ion of a technical report in the manner adopted was unfortunate and could well cause unnecessary and unwarranted concern among the public said Mr Jeffreys. The gradings in the Board of Health report were apparently based on comparison of results of bacteriological tests with a standard recommended by the World Health Organisation
The full text of the WHO standard, however, said that the test results should be viewed in the light of the conditions appertaining in the catchment area, he said
