S.I. SCENIC SPOTS
TV Films For Australia
More than 600,000 Australians will have a better idea of the South Island’s tourist attractions as a result of what has been filmed, noted, and recorded by a party of four men representing Australian press, radio, and television. The party left Christchurch for Auckland yesterday after a week touring the South Island by road and air. The group included Mr D. Magoffin, studio manager of Radio 4BK. Brisbane, Mr B. Mulvey, chief of staff of ABC television, Queensland, Mr A. Moye, television camerman of radio station ABQ2, and Mr P. O’Shea, of the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland, who has been writing for the club's magazine, “Road Ahead.”
All four men were enthusiastic about what they had seen during their stay in the South Island, and said that the scenery and tourist attractions they had seen were all that had been claimed for them.
Mr Mulvey said the team had about six stories for the television series “News Magazine” and “Newsreel.” The former was a weekly programme on Sunday nights and the latter a nightly service. From the material shot —about 2000 ft—there was enough for about two stories on the nightly service and four for the Sunday screenings. Wherever possible filming had been of people rather than of scenic spots. As examples, he said that outside Queenstown a local character had been filmed sluicing for gold, and at Mount Cook a Japanese artist had been the central figure. In both cases the cameras were able in addition to feature the countryside and local settings. The visit by the party was jointly sponsored by T.E.A.L. —to mark the reintroduction of its direct Brisbane to Auckland service—and by the New Zealand Government Tourist Bureau.
The party visited Mount Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Te Anaii, and Invercargill.
