Price Of Sugar
Sir, —From a report in the grocery notes, the price of sugar has been increased by £2 10s a ton. The retail price rise of id per lb makes a total of £4 13s 4d a ton. Does this mean an extra profit to the grocers? If not, what happens to this amount? Will a bag of sugar also increase by id per lb or will the increase be more in line with the increase a ton. —Yours, etc., M. BROWN. April 16, 1962. [•"rhe retail price of sugar is calculated in accordance with a formula approved by the price control authorities,” said Mr D. Wise, president of the Canterbury Master Grocers’ Association. “The increases are Jd a pound, id on two pounds, lid on three pounds, and 2d on six pounds. The retail price of a 70 pound bag has not increased by id a pound.’’]
