This afternoon’s issue of the North Canterbury Gazette will be tnc last published. This was confirmed by a representative of the North Canterbury Gaze’te Company Ltd.. Rangiora, yesterday
With the death of the "Gazette,” Rangtora will be without a localiv published newspaper for the first time except for -he last war period since December 4. 1875, when ’he "Canterbury News” was first published. Although the Gazette’ was first published on August 12, 1932, by Mr Oliver Duft, a former editor of “The Press, ’ the history of this paper is in a large measure the history of the other early papers in Rangiora, and, to a lesser extent, those of Kaiapoi from which it is descended Although published in Rangiora as a bi-weekly the “Gazette” provided a district news service that included Kaiapoi, where ihe number of its subscribers was about the same as in its home town.
