APPEAL FOR CARE
Road Users At Easter (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. April 18. "Road accidents have already claimed more than 100 lives this year and I am very concerned lest the long Easter break causes any more deaths,” said the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) today. He appealed to all motorists to exercise special care over the holiday week-end. “This Easter will be especially hazardous because it falls well into the autumn season, when road accidents invariably show a sharp increase,” he said.
“Then there will be 50.000 more vehicles on the road this Easter than last year.” Mr McAlpine said traffic patrols will be out in force throughout the week-end, but the ultimate responsibility for greater safety on the road rested with individual road users. On pedestrian safety, the Minister said: “Very often it is the pedestrian’s own carelessness which lands him in an accident. But even though the pedestrian’s actions may be legally wrong, there is a moral obligation on the motorist to avoid making the pedestrian ‘dead wrong.’ ”
