OVERSEAS AIRLINES
Rise In Dues “Unfair” (NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 18. The increase in airport dues was unfair to overseas airlines, said Mr H. Sigerist, the district manager for the French airline, T.A.1., commenting today on the decision of the Government to raise airport and airways levies next October. “One day we are told the Mangere international airport will not be open for another year, and the next day we are told about the higher airport fees,” he said. “This seemed the right way to keep the international airlines out of New Zealand.” Mr Sigerist said airlines were already handicapped because there were no decent airports in New Zealand. If improved services could be provided, then the higher fee would be more acceptable.
The New Zealand manager for Canadian Pacific Airlines (Mr E. S. Prentice) said that although an increase was expected, no-one thought it would be quite so staggering. Mr W. L. Rolph, district manager for Pan American Airways, said this was another increase in expenses which was staggering the airline industry throughout the world. He said previous advice of the action would have been appreciated through committee meetings to explain the reasons for the increases.
