“More Offences Recently” (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, April 18. The police were concerned at the amount of cargo pillaging from ships at the ports of Napier, Gisborne, and Lyttelton during the last few weeks, Detective Senior-Ser-geant A. Reid told the Magistrate’s Court at Napier today. Mr Reid was prosecuting Albert Te Wai Woodford, 28, dry cleaner, of Napier, who pleaded guilty to stealing a bottle of whisky from the Kopara on April 16. Woodford was convicted and gaoled for a week by Mr E. F. Rothwell, S.M. “No doubt, temptation is inherent in all men who work on the waterfront and on ships,’’ the Magistrate told Woodford. "Pillaging is an offence that is all too prevalent.” The Magistrate said he would impose a prison sentence. in spite of- the fact that Woodford was a first offender.
